Lead Mining Settlements

Early lead miners walked from their farms, hamlets and villages to extract lead on a small scale. As the scale of production increased, with mines and mills operating away from existing settlements, new facilities had to be provided.

Many of the men who worked in the mines, and the boys who worked on the washing floors, stayed all week in lodgings, often highly unsanitary, at or near their work. The larger lead companies established better quality industrial settlements, such as Rookhope and Middleton-in-Teesdale, with not only housing but other facilities for basic community needs, such as shops, chapels and schools.
