Wark Archive: 16th Century plan of Wark Castle

In 1561 Queen Elizabeth I considered buying the castle from Sir Ralph Grey and commissioned a report on its condition. Johnson provided a detailed account of the very poor condition into which the castle had fallen. He also produced one of the very few surviving contemporary plans of the castle, which is shown here.

Johnson expressed that upon his arrival the castle was 'in most places fallen down, and having no flankers and the rest that yet stands more like to fall than to continue'.

Johnson's survey is crucial piece of evidence, as it is not just a beautiful plan in itself, but provides earliest record of many features, in particular a 'stonehouse' in the outer ward, and a bakehouse, kitchen and house for the constable in the inner ward.
