Wark Castle: Bakehouse Ruins

In the 16th century the Castle went through a period of disrepair, as reported in Johnson's survey. This reconstruction of the bakehouse shows it in a ruinous state being plundered for stone to reuse in other buildings.

Plundering disused buildings for stone is one of the easiest sources of building material, as it is always easier than quarrying. This process accounts for most of the stone dispersal from the original castle at Wark.
