Fraser's Hushes

Fraser's Hushes are a series of large opencast workings for lead ore that used a technique called hushing, in which water was used to remove unwanted debris. The hushes take their name from Joseph Fraser, who was allowed to 'work or hush' this part of the Green Cleugh Vein from 1758. Much of the area occupied by Fraser's Hushes was worked for iron in the mid 19th century.
